Started in Berkeley, California on May Day of 1966, The Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc. began in the backyard of fantasy author, Diana Paxson. It grew, like topsy, in the Bay Area, and soon was holding regular events. The name of the group was suggested by the very fact that a bunch of medievalists in Berkeley were indeed anachronistic (out of place and time), and the ball was rolling.
At present time the Knowne World consists of nineteen "Kingdoms" around the globe and tens of thousands of members who do more than play dress-up on weekends. Serious scholarship into medieval arts and sciences, culture, combat and weaponry continue to be published by the Society and related publications. I you are interested in joining a local group, go to: http://www.sca.org/findsca.html Members and non-members alike are invited to publish content in this group which is related to the worldwide cultural period of 1000 through 1650, with "fuzziness" on both ends of the period. For more information on the SCA in general, see the Society's official homepage: http://www.sca.org/findsca.html Group Stats
